The need for affordable housing is at crisis point in the South West region where average house prices are now 9.5 times the average income, compared to 4.2 in 1997.

In 5 years times, experts predict the average home will cost £300,000 – so how are young people in the South West, where they also earn wages less than the national average, ever expected to own their own home?

Andy Woods, an MYP from Gloucester was invited to be part of an expert panel in a ‘Question Time’ style debate at a conference in Bristol on 26th June organised by the South West Housing Initiative. He took questions from a the audience and was able to highlight this issue on behalf of young people in the region.

Andy is pictured here with other panel members which included MPs from the region Alison Seabeck, Dan Rogerson and John Penrose.
