21.06.2006

On 21st July 2006, MYPs from around the UK will embark upon Leicester University to attend UKYPs 6th Annual Sitting.

This is the only event in the UK, which brings together young people from every LEA and nation (and their youth workers) to discuss issues of national concern to young people, and to consider how these can be addressed.  At UKYP’s previous Sittings, MYPs have produced a Manifesto which has formed the basis of UKYP policy for the year ahead, and has been presented to MPs, Government Departments and NGOs in order to facilitate discussion and change.

However, in 2006 the MYPs have chosen to focus on strengthening their campaigning skills and will be concentrating on three campaign themes:

  • Sex & Relationships Education in Schools
  • Transport – A National Concession Card For Young People
  • Votes At 16

Each campaign theme will be represented by a Select Committee.  The MYPs are being invited to choose which Select Committee they wish to participate in, and will be required to research and bring evidence related to their Committee to the Sitting.  Training will then be given to MYPs around their Select Committee’s theme and the purpose of the Committee, and witnesses will be invited to give evidence to the Committees on Sunday 23 July 2006.  Following the evidence giving sessions, MYPs will produce a report which will outline their plan of action for their campaign for the six months following the Sitting, which will be available on the UKYP website and sent to the relevant agencies.

In addition to the Select Committees, UKYP will once again be inviting Government Departments, private companies and non-governmental organisations, as identified by the MYPs, to run fringe meetings. The purpose of the fringe meetings is to broaden the MYPs outlook on issues, and perhaps introduce them to new ideas/ways of doing things that could benefit the ways in which they work at a local, regional and national level.

The 2006 Annual Sitting will take place at Leicester University between 21st and 24th July.
