Created and organised by the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP), Circles of Influence took place at The British Museum on December 14th 2005. The event had multiple aims: to highlight key issues of importance to young people in the UK; to establish links with a number of associate organisations; and to engage many government departments.
The most important aim of all, however, was to provide an exciting format in which young people, government officials and other influential adults could hold meaningful debate. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from the event shows that UKYP achieved that.
On the day, Members of UKYP (MYPs) and representatives from associate charities were joined by seven Ministers and Secretaries of State, as well as leading figures from business and campaigning charities, in seven debates themed on seven subjects. This led to a fascinating mix of views and experiences, plus lots of cross-cultural and inter-generational communication and learning.
Throughout the year, UKYP supports 11-18-year-olds in the UK to use their voice in creative ways to bring about change on a national, regional and local level.
Circles of Influence showcased the best of UKYP: the ability to bring together diverse groups of young people with adults in positions of influence to discuss issues of joint interest and highlight opportunities for creating social change. The event itself, however, while successful in many ways, was only the starting point.
This report outlines in more depth the scope of the day and provides an overview of the discussions held. It includes the action points which young people have challenged government, the event participants and themselves to take forward.
